Dear Mr. Blacklock:
As per your request, I can report that TransAlta has installed a total of five (5) Phoenix Wailer bird deterrent devices in our service area. We have had no repeat bird contact incidents in any of the substations that these devices are installed in.
The biggest problem we encounter is ravens landing on our low voltage (25 kilovolt) buswork where electrical clearances are reduced. Most of these incidents occur in remote locations and involve lengthy outages and expensive equipment replacements. Since installing these devices we have had no contact at these locations.
We have also experimented with the Phoenix Wailer at locations where we had nuisance bird problems (starlings, pigeons, sparrows). The Wailer seemed to work effectively here also.
If I can be of any further assistance, please call.
Yours truly,
Eric Halland
